چکیده

Context. The Intra-Cluster Medium is characterized by thermal emission, and by the presence of large scale magnetic fields. In some clusters of galaxies a diffuse non-thermal emission is also present, located at the cluster center and named radio halo. These sources indicate the existence of relativistic particles and magnetic fields in the cluster volume. Aims. In this paper we collect data on all known nearby cluster radio halos (z < 0.4), to discuss their statistical properties and to investigate their origin. Methods. We searched for published data on radio halos and reduced new and archive VLA data to increase the number of known radio halos. Results. We present data on 31 radio halos, 1 new relic source, and 1 giant filament. We note the discovery of a small size diffuse radio emission in a cluster (A1213) with very low X-ray luminosity. Among statistical results we confirm the correlation between the average halo radio spectral index and the cluster temperature. We also discuss the high percentage of clusters where both a relic and a radio halo is present. Conclusions. The sample of radio halos discussed here represents the population of radio halos observable with present radio telescopes. The new telescope generation is necessary for a more detailed multifrequency study, and to investigate the possible existence of a population of radio halos with different properties.

Formation and Evolution of Galactic Halos in Clusters of Galaxies

We investigate effects of time evolution of a rich cluster of galaxies on its member galactic halos in the standard cold dark matter (SCDM) universe using high resolution N-body simulations. We identify several hundred galactic halos within virial radius of our simulated cluster. We also find that a large number of halos have been tidally disrupted at z = 0. Therefore we improve a method of der...

The Scaling Relations and the Fundamental Plane for Radio Halos and Relics of Galaxy Clusters

Diffuse radio emission in galaxy clusters is known to be related to cluster mass and cluster dynamical state. We collect the observed fluxes of radio halos, relics, and mini-halos for a sample of galaxy clusters from the literature, and calculate their radio powers. We then obtain the values of cluster mass or mass proxies from previous observations, and also obtain the various dynamical parame...

Clustering and Proto-Clusters in the Early Universe

The clustering properties of clusters, galaxies and AGN as a function of redshift are briefly discussed. It appears that extremely red objects at z ∼ 1, and objects with J − K > 1.7 and photometric redshifts 2 < zphot < 4 are highly clustered, indicating that a majority of these objects constitutes the progenitors of nearby ellipticals. Similarly clustered seem luminous radio galaxies at z ∼ 1,...

HST , radio and infrared observations of 28 3 CR radio galaxies at redshift z ∼ 1 — II . Old stellar populations in central cluster galaxies

Hubble Space Telescope images of 3CR radio galaxies at redshifts 0.6 < z < 1.8 have shown a remarkable variety of structures, generally aligned along the radio axis, indicating that the radio source strongly influences the optical appearance of these galaxies. In this paper we investigate the host galaxies underlying this aligned emission, combining the HST data with ground–based infrared image...

GMRT Radio Halo Survey in galaxy clusters at z = 0 . 2 – 0 . 4 . I . The REFLEX sub – sample

Aims. We present the first results of an ongoing project devoted to the search of giant radio halos in galaxy clusters located in the redshift range z=0.2–0.4. One of the main goals of our study is to measure the fraction of massive galaxy clusters in this redshift interval hosting a radio halo, and to constrain the expectations of the particle re–acceleration model for the origin of non–therma...
